Verifying Product Quality

Why Verification Matters

Counterfeit, under-dosed, or contaminated HRT medications are a real risk — particularly when buying from unregulated sources. Using poor-quality medication can lead to:

  • No hormone level changes (wasted money, no results)
  • Unsafe ingredients (contamination, allergic reactions)
  • Unexpected side effects
  • Delayed transition progress

At-Home Testing

Water Test (Pills)

Some estradiol pills will sink or behave differently in water than counterfeits — but this is not reliable and should not be your primary verification method.

Blood Test Verification

The most reliable way to verify your medication is to check your blood levels:

  • Start at a known dose
  • Test E2 (trough) after 4–6 weeks
  • If E2 levels are far below what the dose should produce, the medication may be under-dosed or counterfeit

For example: 4 mg/day of genuine oral estradiol should produce E2 levels of roughly 60–100 pg/mL (trough). If you get < 30 pg/mL, something is wrong.

Third-Party Testing

Some community organisations or suppliers offer:

  • HPLC testing — quantitative analysis of estradiol content
  • Sterility testing — checking for bacterial/endotoxin contamination

These are the gold standard for verification but require sending samples to a lab.

Batch Numbers and Authentication

  • Legitimate pharmaceutical products have batch/lot numbers
  • Some manufacturers have online verification portals
  • If the batch number is illegible or missing, this is a red flag
