Common Beginner Questions
How long until I see changes?
Bottom growth and libido increase can start within weeks. Voice changes and menstruation cessation typically take 2–6 months. Full masculinisation takes years.
Do I need to take T forever?
Most trans men stay on T long-term. If you stop, some changes reverse (fat distribution, menstruation returns, muscle mass decreases) and some are permanent (voice, bottom growth, facial hair).
What if I miss a dose?
- Injections: If a few days late, just take it. If more than a week, wait until your next scheduled dose.
- Gel: Apply when you remember. Don't double up.
Will T make me bald?
Only if you have the genetic predisposition. Check your male relatives. Finasteride or minoxidil can help.
When will my period stop?
Most trans men stop menstruating within 2–6 months. If bleeding persists beyond 6 months of adequate T levels, see a provider.
Do I need top surgery?
Testosterone does not significantly reduce breast tissue. Top surgery is the only way to remove chest tissue. Some trans men are satisfied without surgery; others pursue it.
Can I get pregnant on T?
Yes. T is not contraception. Pregnancy is possible. Use birth control if needed.
How much does T cost?
| Form | Cost (per month) |
|---|---|
| Injectable T | $10–30 |
| T gel | $20–100+ |
| Blood tests | $40–150 (quarterly) |
