Verifying Product Quality
Why Verification Matters
Counterfeit, under-dosed, or contaminated testosterone medications are a real risk — particularly when buying from unregulated sources. Using poor-quality medication can lead to:
- No hormone level changes (wasted money, stalled transition)
- Unsafe ingredients (contamination, infection from non-sterile injectables)
- Unexpected side effects (from incorrect dosage or wrong substance)
- Delayed transition progress (months of ineffective dosing)
- Health complications (abscesses from contaminated injections, hormone imbalances)
Visual Inspection
Injectable Testosterone (Vials)
| Check | What Genuine Looks Like | ❌ Red Flags |
|---|---|---|

| Expiry date | Present and legible | Missing or obviously altered |
At-Home Testing
Water Test (Pills — Not Reliable)
Some people recommend dropping a pill in water to see if it sinks or dissolves in a certain way. This is not a reliable verification method and should not be used to determine authenticity.
Smell Test
Genuine testosterone injectables suspended in oil may have a mild, characteristic scent depending on the carrier oil and preservatives (typically benzyl alcohol, which has a faint aromatic smell). Lack of any scent is not necessarily a red flag, but a strong chemical or unusual odour may indicate contamination.
Blood Test Verification
The most reliable way to verify your medication is to check your blood levels at a known dose.
Expected Trough Levels for Injectable Testosterone
| Weekly Dose | Expected Trough Total T | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 50 mg/week | 300–600 ng/dL | Typical starting dose |
| 75 mg/week | 500–800 ng/dL | Common moderate dose |
| 100 mg/week | 700–1,000 ng/dL | Standard full dose |
| 125 mg/week | 900–1,200 ng/dL | High end; monitor closely |
| 150 mg/week | 1,000–1,400 ng/dL | Very high; likely too high for most |
What "Trough" Means
Test trough level means testing just before your next injection (at the lowest point in your cycle). For enanthate/cypionate dosed twice weekly, test on the morning of your injection day, before injecting.
If you inject once weekly, test on day 6 or 7 (the day before or day of your next injection).
How to Interpret Results
| If Your T Level Is... | It Likely Means... |
|---|---|
| Within expected range | ✅ Product is correctly dosed |
| Far below expected (e.g., < 200 ng/dL on 100 mg/week) | ⚠️ Product may be under-dosed, counterfeit, or you may be a poor absorber |
| Much higher than expected (e.g., > 1,500 ng/dL on 100 mg/week) | ⚠️ Product may be over-dosed, or you are a hyper-responder |
| Zero or near-zero | ❌ Product contains no active testosterone (counterfeit) |
Other Markers to Check
| Marker | Expected Range | What It Tells You |
|---|---|---|
| Free Testosterone | 15–35 ng/dL (varies by lab) | Bioavailable T; correlates with symptom response |
| Estradiol (E2) | 20–50 pg/mL (men) | Aromatisation indicator; too high = AI may be needed |
| SHBG | 15–55 nmol/L | Binding protein; high SHBG = less free T |
| Hematocrit | < 54% | Polycythemia risk; T can increase RBC production |
| LH / FSH | Near zero (on T therapy) | Confirms exogenous T is suppressing natural production |
Third-Party Laboratory Testing (Gold Standard)
For absolute certainty about what's in your vial, you can send a sample to a testing lab:
| Test Type | What It Measures | Typical Cost | Where to Get It |
|---|---|---|---|
| HPLC (High-Performance Liquid Chromatography) | Exact concentration of testosterone (mg/mL) | $100–$200 | Janoshik, Energy Control, or local analytical lab |
| GC-MS (Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry) | Full compound identification + concentration | $150–$300 | Specialised forensic labs |
| Sterility testing | Bacterial / endotoxin contamination | $50–$150 | Microbiological testing labs |
| FTIR (Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy) | Quick identity check (is this actually testosterone?) | $50–$100 | Some community testing services |
Community Testing Pools
Some Reddit communities (r/TransDIY, r/steroids) organise group buys for HPLC testing — multiple people contribute to test a batch from the same supplier, splitting the cost. This is the most cost-effective way to verify a source.
Batch Numbers and Authentication
What to Check
- Legitimate pharmaceutical products have clear batch/lot numbers printed on the label
- Format: Usually alphanumeric, 6–12 characters (e.g., "B2401A", "LOT123456")
- Cross-reference: Check if the manufacturer has an online verification portal
- Homebrew: Good brewers assign their own batch numbers and track them
Red Flags
| Red Flag | Why |
|---|---|
| No batch number | Product may be untraceable / counterfeit |
| Batch number is handwritten | Unprofessional and suspicious |
| Batch number appears on a sticker (not printed) | Easy to fake; may be relabelled |
| Expiry date is longer than 3 years from manufacture | Suspicious — most T products expire in 2–3 years |
| Multiple products share the same batch number | Batch numbers are unique per product run |
Community Verification Resources

Red Flags Summary
| ❌ Red Flag | Why It's a Problem |
|---|---|
| Price far below market average ($20 for a vial of T) | Likely counterfeit or under-dosed |
| No photos of actual product | Seller may not have the product; using stolen images |
| Refuses to share batch info | Hiding something about the product |
| Packaging looks generic/plain (no branding) | Not from a legitimate pharmaceutical manufacturer |
| Multiple bad reviews within last 3 months | Trust the community consensus; recent issues matter |
| Seller pressures you to buy quickly ("limited stock!") | Classic scam tactic to prevent you from researching |
| Only accepts Western Union / MoneyGram | No recourse if product never arrives |
| Claims to be "pharmaceutical grade" but won't show testing | If it's legit, they should have documentation |
| Labelling has spelling mistakes | Unprofessional; may indicate counterfeit operation |
What to Do If You Receive Suspect Medication
- Do not use it — contaminated or incorrectly dosed T can cause serious harm
- Take photos — clear pictures of the product, label, and packaging
- Post to community forums — r/FTMDIY, r/TransDIY for verification help
- Contact the seller — some legitimate sellers will replace or refund
- Report to the community — warn others about the bad batch/source
- If you injected it and feel unwell — seek medical attention immediately
